Amara Spa, Phnom Penh

I see the signs every time I go around the city. It is quite tempting. A full body massage for $2 dollars? Hard to believe but that is real and common here in Phnom Penh.
The other day I decided to give it a try. After long weeks of hardwork and stress, I thought it is a good idea to treat my husband and myself a little bit of rest and relaxation. By chance, I found the Amara Spa on my Google search, which appeared on Trip Advisor as number 12 among the 22 attractions in Phnom Penh.
I immediately called the number and book a massage for us that same day. The lady who answered the phone was efficient and took my booking without any delay. I realized that they are not busy since I only have 2 hours notice before our appointment or maybe their space is large enough to accommodate a walk in guest.

Amara Spa is located in Sisowath Quay (riverside) inside the Le Quay Restaurant. When we arrived at the spa reception, they already know who we are. After choosing our preferred massage therapy, the receptionist requested us to sit in their lounge where two pairs of slippers are waiting for us. After few minutes a lady arrived with a cold tea and cold towel. I didn’t try the tea because I prefer my tea to be hot.

The masseuse came to pick us up and lead our way. I was panting a little bit when we reached the third floor and was thankful it was our final destination. While climbing the stairs, I was observing every single corner of the spa. It looks clean and well maintained. In the staircase are bowls of floating flowers and every floor has a small lounge.

The 2 masseuse directed me and my husband to 2 separate doors. I was disappointed a little bit since I was advised earlier that we can have the massage together in one room, however, when I was inside, I realized we are on the same room after all (it’s just 2 separate entrance). This experience is quite new. In the UAE, there’s not a chance that a husband and a wife can get a massage in the same room. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated, the glass windows that are from ceiling to floor are covered with dark curtains. There is a nice lamp lit dimly and each room has a lounge chair, a bath tub and a shower.

As soon as I lay down on the massage bed, I closed my eyes and listened to the soft music. I sensed every single movement which the masseuse did. During the process, I briefly opened my eyes and looked at what they are doing. I noticed that the 2 ladies are doing exactly the same for both of us although we have requested for two different kinds of therapy. I didn’t bother to ask.

It was an hour of pampering and rejuvenating. After the massage, I felt that I have achieved bliss and tranquillity and it made my body and mind feeling fresh and recharge. I didn’t want to get up when she said it was over. I was just starting to nap. For only US$25 per person (plus tip), the whole experience was so worthwhile.
